Salary Negotiation Tips

Negotiating for the salary you deserve could be a tricky aspect of your employment phase. The process of salary negotiation is very critical and is quite often under rated by the job seekers. Infact, a number of job seekers attend their interviews with a notion to get their foot in the door of the company. This very notion is very wrong and one should not accept a position at a salary lower than he or she is worth it. Negotiating for suitable salary is all but a fair phenomenon. Some tips mentioned below could be helpful for salary negotiation:

Be Prepared

This is vey critical while negotiating. Try and accumulate as much information you can about the position. Explore every resource and get yourself informed about the career prospects and salary structure of the position. You must be aware of your market value before making a compelling quotation.

Understand your Needs

To be successful in a negotiation process, you must be clear about your requirements or expectations. Therefore, it is imperative for you to examine your needs and priorities. Are you comfortable with lower salary and larger equity or do you feel confident about meeting bonus criteria and so on. Be clear on whether you need relocation allowances or not.

Know your Position while Negotiating

There are times when skills and experience you carry are in great demand and company wants to hire you quickly. This puts you in area of strength while negotiating. However, there are times when you are one of the several candidates the company is considering. Under these circumstances you are in relatively weaker area and it becomes difficult to negotiate.

Do a thorough research on the Industry

This is very important if you are negotiating for the salary at the hot seat. You must have complete knowledge of industry rates and also be aware of your skills to understand where you fit the best.

Never Lie

This is a golden rule. You should not lie in hope for getting a hike. If you lie during negotiation, then sooner or later you will be caught and you will loose your credibility.

Be Fair in Negotiation

Try and be fair in your demands. The employers are likely to agree to anything that may be deemed as fair. You must be able to justify your demands in terms of fairness. For example- If the cost of living allowance is higher where you would be placed, it is only fair to ask for a hike. If executive at similar posts are getting 2 percent of equity, then it is only fair to ask for similar treatment.

Use Uncertainty to gain Advantage

At times, employer is unsure about what will it take to recruit you. In such a case, its initial offer might be close to its best offer. By not disclosing your current compensation or what exactly will it take you to leave your current job, you will force the prospective employer to give you its best offer.

Focus on your Objective and not winning

Many times, negotiation becomes a game of winning or losing negotiations. It is important that you concentrate on accomplishing your key objectives. You must remember that the person you are negotiating with would be controlling your future career. Therefore, it is all but important that you did not make your boss look like a looser.

Know when to Quit Negotiating

Sometimes people do not realize when to stop negotiating. In such times, you run a risk of being perceived as a greedy by your employer. In such a case you may even loose your potential job offer.

Be Respectful while Negotiating

Finally, you will be working in the same company and probably with same colleagues who are interviewing you. Therefore, it is all more important that you negotiate in a peaceful and respectful manner.
